About the Artist
Maura Morales was born in Camagüey, Cuba, where she trained in classical ballet, modern dance, choreography, acting, and folkloric dance at the National Art College. She went on to work as a soloist at various state theaters in Cuba, Germany, and Switzerland before becoming a freelance dancer and choreographer in 2008, regularly performing at renowned international dance festivals.
Since 2010, she has led her own company, the Cooperativa Maura Morales, together with composer Michio Woirgardt, creating numerous full-length works and touring extensively across Europe, Asia, and South America. She is also a sought-after guest choreographer, having created commissioned pieces for state and city theaters including Ballett Vorpommern, Ballett Magdeburg, and the Graz Opera Ballet, among others. Her work has been honored with numerous prizes, including the Kurt Jooss Prize, the jury prize for best dance performance at the international dance fair in Huesca, Spain, and the DURI Prize at the ACT International Dance Festival in Bilbao.
About the Masterclass
In this masterclass, Maura shares the movement language and choreographic approach at the heart of her work — shaped by her training across classical, modern, and folkloric traditions, and refined over more than a decade of creating for her own company and stages across the world. Participants work on technique, presence, and personal expression, exploring how choreography and music function as equal dialogue partners on stage.
Open to professional dancers and advanced students, the class offers insight into the practice of an internationally recognized choreographer and the tools she draws on to build a full-length piece.
