About the Artist

Sophia Barr is a freelance dance artist from the United States, based in Freiburg, DE since 2021. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from Chapman University, California, and is a certified Pilates instructor.

As a choreographer, she has presented solo works at festivals and residencies including Tanzwuchs #6, Studio Round Dresden/Freiburg, Tanzfestival Heilbronn, En Chair Et En Son Festival #8 (Paris), and the Brussels Solo Dance Contest. As a performer, she has toured internationally with Laura Heinecke's HERTZ, Tanz Company Elio Gervasi, and guitarist Roger Tristão Adão.

Recent projects include TANZ: Lachenmann with Shibui Kollektiv, Stabat Mater as lead dancer at Freiburger Münster, and a solo performance honoring Joana Mallwitz at the 2025 Markgräfler Gutedel Prize.

Sophia's work spans choreography, performance, and interdisciplinary collaborations, with a focus on contemporary dance, cultural exchange, and live performance.

About the Workshop

Using a dynamic warmup method created especially for injury prevention in dancers, the workshop prepares the body to approach various directions, qualities, and demands of movement a dancer may encounter — building stability in reaction to spontaneous changes in direction, level, and tempo.

From there, participants move into exercises and choreography rooted in modern and contemporary practices, incorporating all planes of movement and multiple energetic efforts.

Sophia draws inspiration from Release technique, Countertechnique, improvisation, and floor work. The workshop introduces ideas from these forms, focusing on efficient ways to move through space, safe and mindful interaction with the environment and one's own body, and movement in relation to other dancers in class. Best suited for advanced movers interested in training practices that promote a healthy, present dancing body at any age and in any performance setting.
